Chipmunk Update

by Beca on November 1, 2011

There was a crocus bulb sitting on top of here ... guess where it went!

Chipmunk update! No we still haven’t caught it (or them). (Read post about chipmunk here.)

Really we haven’t tried very hard, although we did get some advice from a real seal team guy who told Del hilarious stories of trying to live trap animals who simply turned the trap upside down and took the food out.

We are going to try his method this week and will let you know what happens.

I suppose one reason we haven’t tried hard is other than sitting in the kitchen drawer at night, it has done no harm.

Curiosity keeps me hoping that I will see how he accomplishes it. How does he get in the cupboard and then into the drawer?

However, today I am a little more motivated. I went to check on my bulbs that I am forcing. I have a few daffodils. But, I had taken one of the crocus from a few weeks ago, and instead of planting it decided to force it too.

It was gone. I can see it now. Mr Chipmunk thought I was leaving him a little treat, stacked so neatly on top of the pretty glass. A special dessert just for him!

Silly me – I had forgotten that they like crocus bulbs!

Fall is here for sure … time to go round up some leaves!

Your relationship with your chipmunk is how I feel about the squirrels. They get into all sorts of nonsense in the garden, but deep down I kind of enjoy them. By the way, looks like you have your work cut out for you with all of those leaves!

I love our squirrels too – even though they are always digging away at stuff. The leaves got much “worse” after that picture, but Del ended up doing them one afternoon … letting me off the hook!

Hi Becca,

Believe it or not, here’s what works in my country home: talking to the animals and asking them to leave. I got the idea after reading Carol Gurney’s book on animal communication (to talk with my dogs). I was having a lot of mice problems at the time, and decided to use her technique (essentially, reach out to them in a meditative state, from your heart, and send visual pictures mentally to them) to ask the mice to leave the house. It took two days – two meditations, total of probably 10 minutes. I wouldn’t have believed it if someone had told me – but since I did it, I’m kinda stuck! Months later, I tried it on rabbits in my vegetable garden. It took longer to get them to leave, but leave they did. Total time involved was about a week, with daily 5 minutes “messages” sent their way.
Now that it’s getting cold outside, I may have to “resend” my mental pictures out to the mice, since normally they move inside this time of year, but that’s no problem. This is the best tool I’ve come across. I recommend her book (and accompanying CD) highly.
Good luck!

Thanks Allison – that sounds like a great book! I know what you mean, about asking animals to stay in their own place. I think part of the problem is we have enjoyed having our chipmunks so we partly don’t want this really smart one to move on. We noticed that when we have a chipmunk in our house, the mice don’t stay around. Hum… Anyway, yes, I will check out that book. Thanks!
